2015-2016 Winter Season

Spring Trip
WorldStrides Heritage Music Festival in New York

Picture
By Matthew Cheung

The South Pasadena High School Concert Band, Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble competed in the annual WorldStrides Heritage Music Festival in New York on April 16th. Many instrumental and choral ensembles entered into competition to showcase their musical talent. Among many schools, South Pasadena High School brought home a total of seven awards.

The Concert Band received 2nd place with a gold rating. Orchestra earned first place and a gold rating. The Jazz Ensemble placed second in its division and earned a silver rank.

South Pasadena's Concert Band and Orchestra also received special invitations to attend WorldStrides Heritage Festivals of Gold next year, which are held at famous concert halls throughout the country, including Carnegie Hall.

Individuals from South Pasadena were noted for their remarkable solo performances by being awarded the Maestro award. Sophomore Jared Low showed his amazing skills on the trombone, while sophomore Euan Zhang demonstrated exceptional improvisational ability with his saxophone and clarinet. Senior Felix Diaz shined with his mastery on the trumpet in both concert and jazz performances, and senior Erik Chan exhibited remarkable grace on his violin. With talented soloists, South Pasadena secured four out of the ten total Maestro awards.

This marks the end of a great successful year for the South Pasadena Instrumental Music program. The band, orchestra, and jazz ensembles look forward to one final performance for friends and family at the Spring Concert on Thursday, May 26.

WBA Championships on Nov. 21-22, 2015

Picture
The SPHS Tiger Marching Band and Color Guard successfully took 5th out of 14 bands in their division at the WBA Class Championships in Fresno, CA on Saturday, November 21 with a score of 82.10, qualifying them for the Grand Championship Finals competition the following morning. This is only the second time that they have made it to finals in band history. It is the second consecutive year that they made the finals.  The students were extremely excited and proud of their achievement.
The Western Band Association hosts marching band competitions in the western United States, with bands competing from California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. The SPHS Band competes in the 3A division with 40 other bands. In the finals on Sunday, SPHS placed 12th.  They closed their marching season with a great finish.  Their program, titled "Seven", pays tribute to the astronauts in the Challenger incident. Throughout the fall season, the band has put in hundreds of long hours to dedicate the show to the fallen heroes. They are glad to have had the honor to perform such a heartfelt show.

Following tradition at the end of the marching season, many of the seniors gave speeches after their performance, reflecting over their hardships and the valuable lessons they learned overcoming them. Many seniors mentioned how band had helped them grow in leadership, and how it served as a second family. Seniors also gave advice to the younger members, and urged them to stay in band for the unique life experiences and life-long friends. The room was emotional and some students shed
tears.  The Grand Championship competition was emotional for many of the students as they said farewell to their field show, and especially for the seniors as they said farewell to performing as part of the SPHS Tiger Marching Band.

The band, led by Director Howard Crawford, will continue their excellence in concert performances through the spring semester. Join them for their winter holiday concert on Thursday, December 10 at the high school auditorium.

WBA Trabuco Hills HS on Nov. 7, 2015

Picture
The South Pasadena High School Marching Band and Color Guard competed this Saturday, November 7, at the Tournament in the Hills at Trabuco Hills High School.  They garnered fourth place with a score of 80.15, a four-point jump from last Saturday. The competition was fierce, as the difference between fourth and second place was a minute 0.6 of a point. Members are surprised to have broken the 80-point mark before semifinals, something that hasn't happened in at least eight years.

The students are now working harder than ever before, polishing their movements and cleaning up every visual, every set, and every step in preparation for their last competition. Senior Head Drum Major Nolan Pokpongkiat is surprised at how fast his last season has gone by yet he believes that "this year's show is the best of [his] four years and with such tough and close competition, the band will push itself to new limits to gain the upper hand."

The SPHS Tiger Marching Band will perform at the Western Band Association Semifinals Competition on November 21, in Fresno, California. Before they leave, they will showcase their program one last time at SPHS at Friends & Family Night on Wednesday, November 18, at 7:00PM.

The SPHS Tiger Marching Band and Color Guard earned second place in Class AAA competition at the Mission Viejo Invitational at Mission Viejo High School on Saturday, October 31.  They had a score of 76.05 along with honors in high general effect, high music, and high visual. They missed first place by half a point.

Their program, titled "Seven", pays tribute to the seven astronauts aboard the space shuttle Challenger. Inspired by Antonin Dvorak's "The New World Symphony", the show takes the audience on a journey to a new frontier, exploring the importance of faith and courage in the realization of success.

The band members are especially enthusiastic about "Seven" due to the thrilling arrangement of music, along with challenging field drill movements. They are also excited to have on the field a 20-foot space shuttle prop that they built themselves. It is one of the biggest props they've had in recent years.

Due to undesirable weather conditions this weekend, the band felt that they didn't perform as well as they could have. Senior clarinetist Sheldon Chen said, "The heat and dryness compromised our full potential, but we will be ready to bring the full performance to next week's competition."

On Saturday, November 7, the SPHS Band and Color Guard will continue on to its next competition at Trabuco Hills High School's Tournament in the Hills.

The SPHS Tiger Marching Band and Color Guard competed in the Music in Motion competition this past Saturday, October 17, at Ruben S. Ayala High School. They secured second place with a score of 73.30 and honors in high music and high general effect, awards given to the band with the best musical sound and best development of their program, respectively.

This is more than a 5 point increase in their score from last week's competition, where they scored 68.25. The increase in score can be attributed to additions in show design including visual elements as well as a heavier emphasis on producing different colors and emotions with the music created by each individual.  However, the most impactful moment of the show is yet to come. The band is excited for the last part of their show, in which they will stage the launch of the space shuttle, paying tribute to the seven astronauts in the Challenger's crew.

By next week, they plan to complete their program, titled "Seven", in time for the Bands of America Regional competition at the Long Beach City College. The band and color guard continue to practice diligently, aiming to fulfill their potential by the end of their season at state championships.
